GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP (AP) — Anglers in New Jersey will be permitted to fish for fluke from Memorial Day until the day before Labor Day this year. The state Marine Fisheries Council voted 5-4 Thursday to set the season. The panel eliminated Labor Day in a bid to curb overfishing. Last year, anglers had both holidays. Fishermen in south Jersey favored the early start because their waters warm first. Those in the north who make their living from the sea had hoped to get Labor Day business. The council cut the daily limit from eight to six fish per day. The 18-inch minimum set in 2008 remains. A hearing on rules that could halt or drastically cut the harvest of winter flounder is set for April.
