messages from Guppie Hi Guys & Gals,
Last night I did some research on the fish Charlie thought was a ling, the more I looked at the picture the more it did not look like a ling, his picture came out a bit fuzzy wuzzy, then I remember spotted hake or possible white hake usually show up in the fall, I would say his fish was a spotted hake or a white hake ? It would be unlikely for ling to be in 57 degree water, they usually stay where the water is 50 degrees or below .

I could be wrong but I would say it was a spotted hake or a white hake , I went in the internet and got a picture of a spotted hake and a white hake , they all basically look a like to me ?? Posted in my web to compare
Good Luck To All.
Record on spotted hake Leonard Maartens Jr 1 lb.10.88oz, 18” long caught in April 1996 .

Spotted Hake are predatory fish that feed primarily on other fish and squid. Hake generally live in deep waters of the continental shelf to as deep as 2,000 feet. Hakes are schooling fish and this had led to them being commercially important
The spotted hake can be distinguished from other hakes by the lack of the long filament on the first dorsal fin.
The spotted hake is the most common species of hake on the East Coast.

What ever it might be it is in the hake family, but not a ling .
